Tuition-Free Schools to Consider During these Tough Economic Times
- Being Adventurous Opens up Opportunities
- Reviewing the Possibilities
While there is no such thing as a free lunch, there is such a thing as free tuition. A group of colleges, some of whom might be familiar, is admitting students, tuition free (some, such as Deep Springs, also throw in room and board). That’s appealing in these trying economic times. While the service academies (West Point, the Air Force Academy, Annapolis, the Coast Guard Academy…) might head your list, with their free tuition, and even an $800 monthly stipend, realistically, there are distinct paybacks, and risks-as service to your country might entail. The ‘tuition free’ institutions I’m referring to, offer students the opportunity to study: liberal arts, fine arts, and engineering, without a huge debt-load at the end of the experience. Let’s explore the schools by category.
Liberal Arts:
- Deep Springs College (www.deepsprings.edu) is an all male, 2-year, Liberal Arts College. The college is located on 5,000 arid acres, on the Nevada, California border. Tuition, room and board are all free. In exchange, students work the ranch 20 hours a week. Most of the students, upon finishing their 2-year stint at Deep Springs, transfer to an Ivy League, or similarly competitive institution. (A superb write-up of the school can be found in The Fiske Guide to Colleges, 2008.)
- College of the Ozarks (www.cofo.edu/admissions.asp?page=2) While not nearly as demanding as Deep Springs, the College of the Ozarks, located in the Southern Missouri Ozark Mountains, offers a range of majors, along with an obligatory work study program, of around 15 hours per week. This is a standard 4-year program.
Fine Arts:
- Curtis Institute of Music (www.curtis.edu) is located in the heart of Philadelphia. If you’re seeking a degree in music performance and theory, take note. In 2007, 834 students applied, 58 were accepted.
- Cooper Union (www.cooper.edu) located in the Greenwich Village area of New York City, is well known for its programs in visual and performing arts, along with architecture and engineering. Competition is as on the level with the Ivy League, with 10-11 % of applicants admitted.
Engineering:
- Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering (www.olin.edu) is located just outside of Boston. It features majors in electrical, mechanical, and general engineering. The school was founded in 2002, with a grant from the FW Olin Institute (around $490 Million). In 2007, 1,054 students applied, 11% were accepted.
- The Webb Institute (www.webb-institute.edu) is located in Glen Cove, New York, and is probably one of the most unusual colleges on this list. The school’s purpose is to ‘advance the art of shipbuilding.’ (p. 896, Barron’s Guide to the Most Promising Colleges, “The Webb Institute”, Alan Bolind, B.S. 2005) This is a 4-year intensive engineering program that features an annual 2-month internship (winter term) aboard a vessel. The school has a 100% placement rate, with many of the students continuing their engineering studies in graduate programs at MIT and Stanford. In 2007, 102 students applied; 31% were accepted.
Gaining admission into any of the above institutions, is, generally, highly competitive. All approach learning with a lot of ‘hands on’ experience: Deep Springs you work the ranch; Ozarks, the farm; Curtis, you perform; Cooper Union and Olin, you do a lot of projects; and the Webb Institute you take an annual 2-month jaunt aboard a vessel somewhere in the world. Best of all, however, each institution’s tuition is, as put by Peter Cooper, the founder of Cooper Union, “as free as water and air.” (p. 177, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, 23rd Edition, by Edward B. Fiske).

- Curtis Institute of Music (www.curtis.edu): Philadelphia
- Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering (www.olin.edu):
- The Webb Institute (www.webb-institute.edu): Glen Cove, New York에 위치해 있으며, ‘선진 조선술’을 전수하는 매우 특이한 대학이다(.p. 896, Barron’s Guide to the Most Promising Colleges, “The Webb Institute”, Alan Bolind, B.S. 2005). 4년제의 집중 공학 프로그램과 2달간 승선하는 인턴쉽을 제공한다.
